Company Information
About
Umeme Limited is Uganda's primary electricity distribution company, responsible for distributing approximately 97% of all electricity consumed in the country. The company operates a 20-year electricity distribution concession granted by the Government of Uganda, effective from March 1, 2005, taking over from the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL). Umeme's core activities include operating and maintaining the electricity distribution network, meter reading, billing, revenue collection, installing new connections, and providing after-sales services such as handling customer complaints and power restoration. It serves a wide range of customers, including domestic, commercial, small, medium, and large industrial users, as well as street lighting in cities, municipalities, towns, and trading centers.
Umeme was awarded the concession following electricity sector reforms in Uganda in 1999 and has since focused on repairing, upgrading, and expanding the distribution system. The company purchases electricity solely from Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), the system operator and single buyer model entity. Umeme is listed on the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE) since its IPO on October 15, 2012, with shares cross-listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) starting December 14, 2012. It is owned by Actis Infrastructure 2 fund and plays a dominant role in Uganda's utilities sector.
As a cross-listed entity on the NSE under ticker UMME (ISIN: KE2000005815), Umeme holds a notable market position, ranking among the more valuable and traded stocks, with a market capitalization reflecting its critical infrastructure role despite share price fluctuations.
