Nation Media Group Plc (NMG) is the largest independent media house in East and Central Africa, operating in print, broadcast, and digital media across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda. The company publishes, prints, and distributes newspapers and magazines such as Daily Nation, Business Daily Africa, Taifa Leo, The EastAfrican, Daily Monitor, and The Citizen; broadcasts via radio stations like Nation FM, KFM, and QFM, and television channels including NTV Kenya, NTV Uganda, and Spark TV; and provides digital online products, advertising, e-paper subscriptions, courier services, third-party printing, property development, and ticketing.
Founded in 1959 by His Highness the Aga Khan as East African Newspapers (Nation Series) Ltd under the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development, NMG has evolved from a Kenya-centric newspaper business into a multi-platform media leader. Key milestones include launching NTV in 1999, expanding regionally with stakes in Monitor Publications (Uganda, 76.5%), Mwananchi Communications (Tanzania, 60%), and others, and commissioning a state-of-the-art printing press in Nairobi in 2016 capable of 86,000 newspapers per hour.
Listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE: NMG) and other regional exchanges, NMG holds a dominant market position as the leading private media group in the region, owned primarily by Aga Khan entities (44.66%), with operations emphasizing high-quality content delivery, education initiatives, and adaptation to digital trends.
