About Kenya Electricity Generating Company Plc

Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) is the largest electric power generating company in East Africa, producing over 65% of Kenya’s installed electricity capacity. Incorporated in 1954 as the Kenya Power Company (KPC), it was tasked with developing electricity generation facilities and constructing transmission lines. In 1997, management was separated from Kenya Power, and in 1998, it was renamed Kenya Electricity Generating Company, adopting the trading name KenGen PLC. Listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange in 2006 following a successful IPO where the Government of Kenya sold 30% of its stake.
