About
The NSE 25-Share Index (^N25I) is a market capitalization-weighted stock market index that tracks the performance of the top 25 companies listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) in Kenya. It serves as a key benchmark for investors to gauge the overall health and direction of the Kenyan equity market, providing a diversified representation of leading blue-chip stocks across various sectors.
Launched around January 1, 2001, the index uses free float market capitalization methodology, accounting for shares available to the public, and is reviewed quarterly to ensure it reflects the most investable and representative constituents. Top companies typically included are Safaricom Plc, Equity Group Holdings Plc, East African Breweries Ltd, KCB Group Plc, and others from banking, telecommunications, manufacturing, and energy sectors. It is widely used by investors for tracking market performance, creating index funds, and as a reference for derivatives.
The NSE 25 is considered a vital indicator of Kenya's economic performance, with historical values showing significant growth and volatility, such as reaching over 5,500 points in recent periods. It complements other NSE indices like NSE 20 and All-Share Index, offering focused exposure to Kenya's largest and most liquid stocks.
