About
Unga Group Plc is a Kenya-based holding company primarily engaged in the manufacture and marketing of a broad range of human nutrition, animal nutrition, and animal health products. It operates through subsidiaries such as Unga Limited, which mills wheat and maize to produce flour products for human consumption including chapatti flour, mandazi flour, brown bread flour, maize meal, porridge, and amana rice. The animal nutrition division, through Unga Farm Care (EA) Limited, manufactures animal feeds, mineral supplements, premixes, and animal health products, while also providing technical services to the agricultural sector. Over 90% of its products are sold in the Kenyan domestic market, with exports to Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda.
Founded in 1908 as Unga Limited, the company has over 116 years of history in flour milling and animal feed production, making it one of Kenya's oldest companies. It was incorporated in 1928 and expanded through acquisitions like Kenya Grain Mills and others between 1929 and 2000. In 2000, facing financial losses, it formed a strategic alliance with US-based Seaboard Corporation, transferring operations to Unga Holdings Limited, where Unga Group holds 65% and Seaboard 35%. Seaboard provides technical support, capital, and sourcing assistance. Key milestones include new mills in Eldoret (1937, upgraded 2018), Nakuru (1956), and past ventures like Unga Millers Uganda.
Unga Group Plc is listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE: UNGA) since 1971 and maintains a leading position in Kenya's flour milling and animal feed sectors. Its headquarters are in Nairobi with mills in Eldoret, Nakuru, and Mombasa. Recent financials show FY25 revenue of Shs 26.1B with a strong turnaround, and it ranks as the 44th most valuable NSE stock with a market cap of KES 1.5 billion.
