Kenya Power and Lighting Company Plc
Company Information
About
Kenya Power and Lighting Company Plc (KPLC), commonly known as Kenya Power, is a public liability company listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). The company is engaged in the transmission, distribution, and retail of electricity purchased in bulk from sources including Kenya Electricity Generating Company Limited (KenGen), Independent Power Producers (IPPs), Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), and Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO). It operates across four regions: Nairobi, Coast, West Kenya, and Mount Kenya, with an interconnected network of transmission and distribution lines covering approximately 56,797 kilometers. In addition to electricity services, KPLC provides optic fiber connectivity to telecommunication companies via its infrastructure along high voltage power lines.
Founded in 1922 and listed on the NSE in 1972, the company has evolved significantly. In 1997, Kenya Power Company de-merged from KPLC to form KenGen, and in 2008, transmission functions were transferred to Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO). KPLC rebranded to Kenya Power in June 2011, focusing on distribution and retail while managing electric metering, licensing, billing, emergency services, and customer relations for industry, offices, schools, hospitals, and domestic users.
As Kenya's primary electric utility, Kenya Power holds a dominant market position in electricity distribution, serving a growing customer base driven by economic expansion, improved power supply, and tariff adjustments. Its performance is linked to rising demand from energy-intensive projects and accelerated connections, positioning it to meet the nation's increasing electricity needs.
