About

Kenya Pipeline Company PLC (KPC) was established on 6 September 1973 under the Companies Act (Cap 486 of the Laws of Kenya) and commenced commercial operations in February 1978. For more than four decades, KPC has served as a critical national infrastructure utility supporting Kenya's energy security and regional economic integration across East and Central Africa.

Originally incorporated as a wholly state-owned corporation under the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, KPC was converted into a public limited company and subsequently listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) under the ticker symbol KPC, following an Initial Public Offering in which the Government of Kenya divested 65% of its shareholding while retaining a 35% strategic stake.

The company operates East and Central Africa's primary petroleum products pipeline network and supports an economic corridor serving over 300 million people. Beyond petroleum logistics, KPC has progressively diversified into fibre-optic telecommunications, laboratory services, oil and gas training, and crude refining operations.

Pipeline Network and Infrastructure

KPC operates an extensive, integrated petroleum products infrastructure spanning approximately 1,342 kilometres of pipeline, with a combined throughput capacity of approximately 14 billion litres of petroleum products annually. The network connects the Port of Mombasa — Kenya's primary import gateway — to major inland consumption centres and onward export markets.

Principal Pipelines

  1. Line 1 (Mombasa – Nairobi): The original 14-inch diameter, 450-kilometre pipeline completed in 1978, forming the backbone of the network.
  2. Line 2, 3 and 4 (Nairobi – Western Kenya): An additional 446-kilometre 8/6-inch system completed in 1994, extending service to Nakuru, Eldoret and Kisumu.
  3. Line 5 (Mombasa – Nairobi): A newer high-capacity pipeline that augments and modernises the original Mombasa–Nairobi corridor.

Depots and Loading Facilities

KPC operates five strategically located conventional petroleum depots in Mombasa, Nairobi, Nakuru, Eldoret and Kisumu, supported by two dedicated aviation fuel depots at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (Nairobi) and Moi International Airport (Mombasa). The system holds over 1 billion litres of strategic reserve capacity and supports onward distribution by truck to Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan and northern Tanzania.

Business Lines

Pipeline Transportation and Storage

The core business: transportation, handling and storage of refined petroleum products including Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), Automotive Gas Oil (diesel), Dual Purpose Kerosene, Jet A-1 aviation fuel and related products on behalf of Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).

KPC operates a 96-core Fibre Optic Cable (FOC) network running along its pipeline right-of-way. Licensed by the Communications Authority of Kenya in 2018, the FOC business — formally launched in April 2022 — offers dark fibre leasing and connectivity solutions to telecommunications operators, internet service providers, and government agencies.

Laboratory Services

KPC operates premier oil and gas testing laboratories in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret and Kisumu. The laboratories are accredited to the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories, providing quality assurance services for both internal operations and external commercial clients.

A wholly-owned subsidiary established in 2014 following a resolution by the Heads of State of Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan. MIOG offers specialised training, certification and consultancy services in oil and gas operations, safety, maintenance and management for the East African region.

Kenya Petroleum Refineries Limited (KPRL)

KPRL became a fully owned subsidiary of KPC through a transfer of shares. Originally established in 1959 to refine imported crude oil, KPRL today supports KPC's storage, blending and distribution operations.

Strategic Direction

KPC's strategic trajectory is guided by the KPC Vision 2030 Strategic Plan, which builds on the earlier Vision 2025 ambition to position the company as Africa's premier oil and gas hub. The plan is anchored on four strategic pillars:

  1. Diversification and Growth — expanding revenue streams beyond traditional pipeline tariffs.
  2. Operational Excellence — entrenching reliability, safety and cost efficiency across the value chain.
  3. Customer and Stakeholder Focus — sustaining a high customer satisfaction index and strong stakeholder partnerships.
  4. People and Culture — building a high-performance, values-driven workforce.
