About

The Zamara Kenya Equity Index (USD) (^ZKEQTU) is a financial index listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) in Kenya, designed to reflect the performance of the investable equity market in the country. It tracks a universe of stocks trading on the NSE that meet specific selection criteria, including a free float market capitalization exceeding $50 million (equivalent to KES 5 billion) and a 6-month average daily value traded above $50,000. As a Total Return Index, it incorporates both price movements and reinvested dividend income, with versions available in both Kenyan Shillings (KES) and US Dollars (USD). Stocks are capped at 20% of the index weight, and it uses a modified market capitalization weighting method, rebalanced annually in April.

Launched by Zamara, a pension fund administrator, in partnership with the NSE and S&P Dow Jones Indices, the index was introduced to provide better analysis tools for market performance and address liquidity issues by focusing on sufficiently liquid shares. The launch date is July 9, 2018, with the first value date set as December 31, 2012. It serves as a benchmark for investors, frequently referenced in actuarial surveys comparing returns against other indices like the NSE All Share Index (NASI).

The index holds a prominent position in the Kenyan financial markets as part of the NSE Indices segment, offering a reliable measure of equity market performance for institutional investors, pension funds, and analysts. It is calculated end-of-day and remains a key reference in performance reports as of 2025.
